Hayflakes is a 501(c)3 non-profit animal sanctuary in central California dedicated to long term rehabilitation. At Hayflakes we take a special interest in animals that have been so affected by cruelty and neglect they simply cannot withstand the fast paced adoption programs of normal rescues. Lack of funding, proper facilities and qualified foster homes make it impossible for most rescues to handle these special needs animals. Using patience and alternative training methods, Hayflakes works with veterinarians, trainers and other professionals to slowly rehabilitate animals that have been physically and emotionally traumatized.

Over the last three years Hayflakes has evolved into a haven for over fifty animals including dogs, cats, horses and exotic birds. Hayflakes Sanctuary grew out of a desire to give an opportunity to dogs with fear aggression, separation anxiety and other behavioral issues a chance to heal. Too often, we saw victims of neglect or abuse euthanized because they needed more time, training and rehabilitation. When given time in a structured and loving environment most fearful animals learn that humans can be friends. These animals often form an intense bond with their people. They seem to understand on some level how lucky they are to be in a loving home at last.

This little girl was found abandoned and running wild at a golf course. She looks to be a dachshund and chihuahua mix. She managed to survive by handouts from people and scavenging. She was feral, terrified of people and had to be caught in a trap. As scared as she was, to her credit, she never once offered to bite. With time and patience, she has learned to enjoy human company and has become a real cuddle bug. She's still easily startled and will retreat a safe distance, but will come back when coaxed.

"Stella" is a spayed female pit-boxer mix, about 40 pounds. She seems to have had no socialization as a young dog and acted as though she may have been kicked. She was especially nervous around men at first. With time, she bounced back and is now an extremely sweet and loving girl - even with men. Unfortunately, she gained so much confidence that she thinks she's the queen bee with other dogs. She has learned to mind her manners most of the time, but she needs to be the only dog in her new home. Stella wants so badly to be somebody's best buddy. She's obedient and quiet in the house, but loves to play if invited. She would excell at agility. She's small, fast and boy can she jump!

"Chubbers" is a neutered male husky cross who was surrendered by his previous owner. He's friendly with people, but has had some food aggression issues in the past and he tends to be bossy with other dogs. He needs an owner who will assert their "alpha dog" status, preferably someone with nordic breed experience.
